Institute Mihailo Pupin
Institute Mihailo Pupin is the leading Serbian R&D institution in the field of Information & Communication Techologies.

Automation & Control Systems Ltd
The Automation & Control Systems Ltd is the core division of the Institute Mihailo Pupin, and the owner of the VIEW4 application.

The long list of the Institute's references and customers is the best proof of its high professional and techological achievments.

ATLAS Systems
The other related IMP project: ATLAS Systems (ATLAS-MAX & pikoATLAS) provides the underlying RTU and PLC infrastructure needed for VIEW4 control implementation

You are here:     Overview ATLAS Project
ATLAS Project

ATLAS is the IMP registered brand name for a variety of the RTU equipment - Remote Terminal Units, developed and manufactured under the supervision of the Institute "Mihailo Pupin".  ATLAS RTU equipment is widely used in the local and remote process control environment, and it takes a significant portion of the regional market.  The project was born almost half a century ago, but still is going very strong.   The ATLAS Project started in late 1960-ties and continued through early 1970-ties as several designs of Remote Control Equipment for Belgrade's Municipal Electric Power Distribution Company - EDB.  The name ATLAS originated from the Greek mythical titans who are holding and carrying Earth - a kind of prediction for the project's role and significance in the regional electric power control.  It turned-out that the future project development fully proved the initial "oracles".

Final Testing of ATLAS-DD3 (in operation since 1979)

The implemented "technologies of sixties" varied between transistor, low scale and large scale integration technologies, and final products presented specialized hardware-coded devices.  Usually, they operated as a pair: an RTU unit on the process side, and a central unit in the Control Room.  In late 1970-ties, the first commercially available integrated microprocessor Intel 8080 made a difference: the hard-coded designs became obsolete, and the new era of programmable ATLAS RTU devices started.  Since than, many generations of ATLAS RTU equipment were delivered, each more advanced than the previous one.  By moving to the area of programmable computers, the same ATLAS RTU hardware allowed many different implementations and continuous improvements.  The benefits were enormous.

The ATLAS Project is fully supported by the VIEW Project (or we can say the opposite - all depends of a view angle to those two projects).  ATLAS RTU equipment is built for the harshest process environment, and has a long history of practical implementations - the accumulated experience always presented a basic step in each subsequent ATLAS RTU development and design.  ATLAS RTU fully complies with all world standards for this kind of equipment.

ATLAS Equipment

We are proud of being competing for a half century in the demanding remote process control arena.  Our principal ad is the fact that the installed ATLAS RTU equipment is running for decades worldwide - we do not need other "commercials".
